Risk factors for developing PTSD include:
- Wars and armed conflicts
- Witnessing an event involving violent death
- Severe accidents
- Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, including during childhood
- Violent psychological trauma during childhood and adolescence—either one-time or prolonged
- Serious health issues or being in intensive car accident
- Complicated childbirth
- Having a life-threatening illness
- Terrorist attacks
- Natural or man-made disasters
