Risk factors for developing PTSD include:

  • Wars and armed conflicts
  • Witnessing an event involving violent death
  • Severe accidents
  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, including during childhood
  • Violent psychological trauma during childhood and adolescence—either one-time or prolonged
  • Serious health issues or being in intensive car accident
  • Complicated childbirth
  • Having a life-threatening illness
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Natural or man-made disasters
