Existential crisis

Signs of an existential crisis include:

  • Feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Awareness of one’s mortality or belief in the absence of an afterlife
  • Realization that one’s life lacks purpose or meaning, whether supernatural or simple, other than living for the sake of living
  • Disintegration of a sense of reality or worldview
  • Awareness of one’s freedom and the consequences of accepting or rejecting it
  • Extreme experiences of pleasure or pain that prompt a search for meaning.
